What dog breed is gentle/docile and good with children under 8?

My son has ADHD and slight autism and we do not need a high energy dog as he needs a calming influence. Must be enough excercise to take for walks and toss the ball, no working breeds that need something more than that to do. Want a medium size dog, not a yippy thing or a massive giant. Short haired preferred also. Need suggestions!!! A watch dog that barks when somethings not right would be a plus.
