What is the ideal middle sized dog breed?

My roommate and I are looking to get 2 dogs. We live in Boston and are dog lovers. We think that two large dogs would be too much, and we are not too keen on little dogs, so does anyone have any middle-sized dog breeds that they recommend?
I consider a golden to be a big dog, and a chuiwawa to be small. We live in an apartment but are VERY active people. We walk everywhere and run three times a day. We live ten minutes from Boston Commons and go there almost every afternoon.
