What Small Dog breeds are good with cats?

Kisa asked:

My family is thinking of getting a dog over the summer. We have 2 cats, and aren’t home from about 11am-3pm. We have a small backyard, but a big park across the street from our house, and we would be able to walk the dog every day. What would a good breed be for this life style?

It really depends on the dog more than the breed. Go to a shelter and get a dog that has lived successfully with cats before. All shelter dogs are tested for behavioral problems before they are placed for adoption.

It does not go by breed, rather by individual dog.
You would do well to go to Animal Services, the Humane Society or SPCA to see if they have a dog the size you want who is known to be o.k. with cats.

I have 6 dogs at the moment, all the same breed, 3 are fine with cats and the other 3 would try to “desqueek” any cat they get ahold of.
Strictly an individual thing - get a mature dog you know will tolerate your cats.

in my opinion, id have to say a toy poodle
my poodle is scared of cat (in other words, he stays away from cats)

I have a miniature dachshund and two cats. She is great with both of them! They all love each other so much!! But I started with my dog first and then adopted two kittens so they were too little to hurt my dog. If your cats are big I’d be careful when getting a small breed puppy. They may not like the new addition and may scratch it.

Most puppies will adapt well to cats if they are with them from when they are young. I agree that it is pretty breed independent, but that breeds with strong prey drives might have a harder time with a cat.

We have two Chihuahuas and one of our Devon Rexes play with them all the time (chase each other, play fight) and they even sleep together on the back of the couch in the sun in the morning.
